5 Simple Steps to Establish a Toxin Free Family

There are so many things out there to worry about. We are constantly bombarded with this and that will harm, cause cancer, or cause ABC problem for our family or kids. This is not a fear based post. I just want to communicate my heart for switching to safer cleaners, laundry detergent, and beauty products. I started sweeping my home of toxins almost 2 years ago. I decided to do this because of the health problems I was facing (which you can read about here and here). I always recommend starting slowly with one or two items at a time. I always get questions from friends and family who are looking to switch to safer products and get rid of toxic products in their homes. I hope this post helps you, but please know these are my opinions. I would love to know what works for you! I will even include one of my favorite DIY recipes for you to make your own foaming hand soap at home!
1. Laundry detergent was one of the first things I switched in my home. I made my own for a while, but I slowly realized it was not getting my laundry as clean as I would like and it seemed really rough on our clothes. I read more and most of the ingredients in homemade detergent are laundry boosters, and there wasn’t enough soap to actually get my clothes clean. For laundry, I use Kirkland’s Environmentally Responsible Laundry detergent from Costco. I think it is one of the cheaper and most effective detergents out there that is plant based and not full of toxins. It also smells really good. I ditched the dryer sheets and I use wool dryer balls and drop 2-3 drops of essential oil on them for fabric softener. I only add new drops of oil every 3-4 loads.
2. For dish soap, I use Seventh Generation and I think a little goes a really long way. It is more expensive than other dish soaps, but I feel like you don’t have to use as much at all. I have used the same bottle for about 6 months–and I wash bottles and pots and pans with it every day.
3. I used to buy really expensive hand soaps that were wonderfully scented, but full of yucky stuff I couldn’t pronounce. Now, for hand soap, I make my own in a foaming soap dispenser (you can buy empty ones on Amazon, or just use the ones you have leftover, which is what I usually do!). Recipe is at the bottom of this post! Try it and let me know how it works for you!
4. For make-up, Target has a whole section of natural/plant based products. I have just ordered the new Young Living Sweet Savvy Mineral Makeup! I can’t wait to do a demo for you all and show you how it works! I usually get my mascara from Vitacost–they have mineral based mascara and it tends to be super cheap and works great! But, Young Living also just released their mascara and as soon as it is back in stock, I will be sure to demo that for you, too! Beauty products seem like no big deal, but our skin really is our biggest organ. I switched to all Young Living lotions, soaps and I even use their shampoo and conditioner. I make my own lip balm and put them in containers (I give the extras away or add them to gifts!). I am on Essential Rewards with Young Living, so I get my monthly wellness box every month full of things like toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, soap and shampoo. I get points back every month for free products, too!
5. I used to make my own deodorant, but I just don’t think I could get the right proportion of ingredients for maximum effectiveness. So I began trying every natural deodorant under the sun! After many rounds of trial and odor (HA! but for real!), I finally found what works for me and the Engineer. We use a brand called Schmidt’s. It works, it doesn’t have aluminum or ingredients you can’t pronounce, and they have a variety of scents and unscented (which is my favorite) and sensitive skin, too. I usually put a drop of lavender essential oil on my arm pits, and then apply deodorant. Lavender helps the sensitive under arm skin feel smooth and happy!
There are many other ideas on switching to safer products that I will include in my toxin-free family series. I love sharing the products I use and how they work for me! Let me know what works for you in the comments below!
I also order monthly from Grove Collaborative! I am a VIP, so I always get free shipping and tons of free goodies! It is a great way to get your essentials shipped to your home without having to go to the store! And with 2 littles, I need all the help I can get! Here’s my referral link: https://www.grove.co/referrer/566274/ We both get $10 if you click my link!

DIY foaming hand soap recipe:

¼ c unscented castile soap (or scented is good, too! I have been using the Almond Bronner’s Soap that I get from Grove and it smells divine!!)

2 t olive oil or Vitamin E oil (I use Vitamin E during the winter when my hands need a little help!)

5 drops YL lavender eo

5 drops YL frankincense eo

(I use different oils in different seasons. In my kitchen right now I have Rosemary and Lemon in my soap dispenser. Use what you love!)

1 Tbsp witch hazel (helps to emulsify the oils with the water)

2 c water

Put in a foaming pump dispenser and it should last 4-6 weeks!

My new favorite thing!

I have researched and read about this for almost a year now. I did not want to jump into this without knowing a little bit of everything. I think my husband is amazing for listening to me ramble on about this and that. It is true. I have consumed the Kool-Aid of Essential Oil mania! I fell in love with Young Living Essential Oils. And I want to tell you about it…because they have helped me so much! Now, I am not a doctor, but I do know from my own personal experience that Young Living Essential Oils have helped me!!

Most of you know, I was diagnosed with MS last September. I was experiencing many symptoms before my diagnosis, but we weren’t sure what was going on. I started looking into the oils and other ways to improve my life (supplements, yoga, diet, etc). I drastically changed my diet last year and began the Trim Healthy Mama lifestyle. Many of the mamas talked about the oils and supplements. So, I started researching as much as I could! I wanted to know the details, what they helped with, how to use them, etc. I started seeing a few friends post about the oils, specifically Young Living and so I began asking questions and I bought my first oil: Peppermint!

I always dilute my oils, mostly so they last longer and because oils like peppermint are considered “hot” oils and need some diluting for sensitive skin. I dilute using coconut oil or olive oil.
The next oils I bought: Thieves, Lavender and Cedarwood. Lavender and Cedarwood are very calming and help me relax (always dilute cedarwood, but lavender you can put on “neat” or straight on your skin without dilition). I use Thieves on my feet every single day! I work in a public library and you just never know what kind of germies are around! I love knowing that I am protecting myself without using harsh chemicals!
And I knew I couldn’t stop there, that I wanted a diffuser and I wanted more oils! So, I saved for a month and bought the Premium Starter Kit! Y’all. It is THE. BEST. DEAL. EVER. $150 for 11 oils, a home diffuser (a $90 value), a starter kit for sharing, 2 samples Ningxia Red, and 10 samples to pass out to friends/family. It is the best ever! So many oils are included and you get a 24% discount on oils for life! You never have to share, or you can share away and build a business! It is one of the best companies out there, and THE BEST for essential oils.

So, as I learn more I will share with you all here. I am amazed by the oils. They help me so much! I also think it is important to share with you all that just because I am using the oils doesn’t mean I am not listening to my doctors. I will continue to use my MS meds and give myself an injection 3x a week to hopefully slow in the progression of this disease. I will continue any and all tests that my doctors need me to do. I just know the oils have enhanced my quality of life and bring me better health and wellness. They are not a cure or a substitution for my other medicine, and they do have to be reapplied frequently for maximum results. I have been feeling better for the past 2 months, and I thank the Lord for that, my MS meds, and the oils for helping me! It feels so good to be healthy!
I believe and trust in Young Living oils because of the promise they see as their calling: “Seed to Seal”. From the seed of every plant to the seal of every bottle, there are incredible standards in place that they do not compromise. EVER. No other company says that. No other company makes that kind of promise and sticks to it. So, I trust them for me and my family!

So, that’s what I am learning. I am constantly researching and building my knowledge on the oils. I would love to have some of you local people over for a class. If you would like to know more, let me know! I would also love to share my discount with you! I get a 24% discount. I am placing an order this Friday, February 20th. So, let me know if you would like to try something! I pray blessings and wellness over all of you!
Much love!!
